Featured on the map is our own De Beauvoir Square, along with Broadway market, Canonbury Square and Columbia Road.

De Beauvoir Recycling Campaign
We’ve successfully campaigned to make the area a better place for cyclists. We now want to make De Beauvoir a better place for recycling too.
Hackney now has higher recycling rates than ever before - but we can do more - especially in some of the area's newer private developments.

Fire safety advice
The London Fire Brigade came to the latest Shoreditch Neighbourhood Committee tonight to advise local residents on the best way to stay safe from fire.
Free risk assessments & free smoke alarm
They made the offer that EVERY Hackney resident can have a free fire assessment for their home AND a free fire alarm fitted by the fire brigade.
Below is some of the advice given ..
Blocks of flats
If you live in a block of flats and you discover smoke or fire outside your flat, stay in your property and phone 999 immediately. You're safer in your home.
Security gates
They advised against locking any security gates you might have on front doors while you are in your home - it makes it very difficult to reach you or your loved ones in the event of a fire.
Fire extinguishers and blankets
Interestingly, fire brigade advice is no longer to try to put a fire out yourself, but to get out of the house and leave it to the professionals.
They advise that fire blankets and extinguishers should be used ONLY to aid your exit from your home.

Snow and ice
We've received assurances that there is enough grit to see Hackney through the worst of the weather over the next few days.
The approach the council takes is to grade roads into three categories. Category one and two roads are prioritised for gritting. These are the main roads, bus routes, town centre roads and those roads around hospitals.
This work can be slow and street cleaning staff are taken off their normal work and are tasked with distributing grit and sweeping snow. The council does try to do as many streets as possible, but the priority is to keep traffic and public transport moving. February last year showed what happened if the main roads weren't cleared often enough. Having a decent amount of traffic is critical to ensure that the salt put out on the road actually works in removing the snow and ice.

Fight the Boris bus fare rises
People in Hackney returned to work this week to be hit by the biggest fare increases in real terms in Transport for London’s history.
People in Hackney are amongst the hardest hit in London, with surveys showing 82 per cent of residents are regular bus users.
The Tory Mayor’s fare hikes mean single bus fares have risen 20% - from £1 to £1.20
Weekly bus passes will also increase by over 20%, from £13.80 to £16.60
Launching a campaign against the fare rises – Be Fare Boris - Mayor of Hackney, Jules Pipe, said: “We are working hard for our residents through the recession, which is why I am proposing to the Council to freeze our share of the Council Tax next year for the fifth year in a row.
“Boris Johnson’s proposals threaten to undermine that support by hitting residents who have no choice about how to get to work.”
